Books and Movies

How many of you would like to have monthly book or movie discussions? I'm thinking perhaps we can collectively pick 2-3 books and/or movies each month (that way, we have options) and host a discussion post where we can chatter on about it to our hearts content.

Collectively means everyone in the community would have input on the material because I don't want to come up with it every month. I know in the past I've read things I normally wouldn't have thought of due to the interest of a book/movie club, and like the idea of expanding my horizons.

- How do you tend to read books? By that I mean, do you purchase new, used, library, borrow from friends, eBook, etc.
- How about movies? Do you go to theatrical releases? Do you wait for the DVD? Stream?
(I'm not asking about whether you obtain via legal means or not, just what method you use to watch. If you say 'download', I'll assume you purchased it. *winks*)

um ...and here, have a poll.

Books I get from the library; movies sometimes from the library and sometimes from netflix. I'd love it if you'd do a discussion of a book that was available in audiobook format--I get most of my reading done by listening to audiobooks, these days.

How do you tend to read books? By that I mean, do you purchase new, used, library, borrow from friends, eBook, etc.

I usually buy new unless the book is out of print and I'm short on funds and then I buy used. Sometimes I buy ebooks since I have a Nook. I think it's 80% physical books and 20% digital.

- How about movies? Do you go to theatrical releases? Do you wait for the DVD? Stream?

I got to the theaters if I really want to see the movie. I went to more movies when I was in a small town and could walk to the theaters. I go on occasion now that I'm a metro area. I usually wait for the DVD.

I buy second hand books, local library is crap! Or sometimes go to main one in town.

I buy cheap DVDs from the supermarket!! I also watch them on telly. Film4 for example (being very British again!!)

FUN!

I get most of my books from the library, either in paper or eBook format. Can't buy every book I read--I'd run out of space! I mostly buy books when I fall in love with a book and want to be able to reread it at will, or when I generally like the author and figure I'll probably want to reread the book, or when I'm travelling.

I go through phases where I see a lot of movies in the theatre. I'm not really in one of those phases right now, so mostly that means I don't watch movies. Or I catch them when their air on TV. (Finally saw Up in the Air on the weekend!) Or I watch the DVDs I already have.

I'm with you. I can't afford to buy too many books, nor do I want to store them. I love books, and had I a mansion I'd have a huge library. I like ebooks very much though. I can horde them without cluttering anything but my hard drive. I save the physical book purchases for things I want to read repeatedly.

I mostly check books out from the library, second mostly get ebooks, and new/used book purchases are pretty much tied for third place. Borrowing from friends, not so much.

It's a rare movie that will get me to a theatrical release. I wait for most things to come out on DVD and I watch an insane amount of streaming content.

At the moment, I'm leading a read-through of The Golden Asse by Lucius Apuleius on an email loop. So you know I'm irredeemably geeky and not afraid to do book discussions, at least. :)

I used to always borrow books from the public library since my parent's restaurant was right across the street from it, but now that we've moved to a location closer to home, I'm not close to any libraries, so it's mainly ebooks for me.

As for movies, if I really want to watch something, I wait until it's available to download. Or I'll catch it when it finally airs on TV. I really don't watch as many movies as I'd like to because I hate watching them alone. >.<

Hmm, I have no idea if my library offers eBooks. I should check that out...

Well, now you can watch them with us!!?!?!

Exactly! That's why I like the idea. I mean, I'll have someone to discuss with, lol.
