I thought we could try something different with regards to books this month. It's been a while since I participated in a reading challenge that wasn't just X number of books per year and thought something short and sweet might be fun!

There are three ways to play.

COFFEE: Read up to 3 coffee books
Interpret this however you'd like. It can be set if a coffee house, have coffee in the title, the cover can be vaguely coffee-colored, characters can drink coffee, someone told you about the book while you were drinking coffee, anything goes.

TEA: Read up to 3 international books
Something not from your own country. The author can be from somewhere else, or it can be set in another country (or outer space, etc.)

THEE: Read up to 3 books using letters in your name
You can use your initials, your real name, your online name, your last name, whatever. The letters can correspond to the title or author.

As an alternative, you can do one from each.

Leave a comment if you're participating (although there's no obligation). Feel free to list books you find, ones you plan to read, suggestions for anyone doing a certain set, etc. If you only get to one book, that's awesome! If you read more than three, you're amazing!

Hiya.

Since its a new year and it seemed fitting I thought we could talk about books that we want to read this year. These could either be shiny and new and just published or older books you've been meaning to read but haven't quite managed to do so thus far.

+ Are there any newly published books you want to read this year?
+ Are there any older books you've been wanting to read (and intend to do so this year)?
+ Are there any books that you think the rest of us should read, if we haven't already, and why?

And,

+ What have you been reading since the new year?

Eeep how did December hit us this fast? I hope you all have time in between all the baking and the panic to grab a good book and some down time. Since December for me is tied closely in with nostalgia(I do the same stuff every Christmas Eve. No I shall not be growing up, thank you), I figured I'd ask

+ What were your favorite books as a child?
+ Do you have any particular books you re-read for the Holidays?
+ Are books a thing on your wish list? If so, any particular books on your list this year?
+ Do you tend to buy books for other people?
+ What's your thought on The Hobbit being stretched into three movies? (let's keep things spoiler free)
Also,
+ What's the best book you've read this month?

So we had two options for books this past month, The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin and Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Which book did you read/re-read? What made you choose that one?
What were your general thoughts?
Would you recommend it to others? Why or why not?

some more stuff on each book & a poll for May )

05 April 2012 @ 01:10 pm
Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin

The Dispossessed is available in eBook and audiobook formats.
Cordelia's Honor appears only as paperback @ B&N, but perhaps you all have other sources? Is it a combo of Shards of Honor and Barrayar? (because those seem available via audiobook format)

I'm planning on watching some 80's movies this weekend. Are you?

We didn't get any duplicate nominations for books, so we'll have to do a ticky box. We'll go with the top 2-3 books from this poll as our April options. :)

So.... our 80's movies that we'll discuss sometime mid-month are:
The Princess Bride & Labyrinth

Just a reminder, we have a free chatroom here which is open to anyone who wants to use it to coordinate watching at the same time or just to randomly chat.

Oh, and the goal of having more than one is to give you OPTIONS. You can pick one or the other or watch both -- it's all good.

Next up... BOOKS!
List up to four science-fiction books and I'll do the same (pick out the 2 or 3 most popular choices).

I know there are a lot of series out there. Everything seems to be a series lately. I don't know if that's good or bad - but if you're choosing something in a series, I think it's best to start with the first of a series?? What do you think?
Also, if it's widely published and available in various formats, that'd be useful for those who might have a harder time getting their hands on something.

How many of you would like to have monthly book or movie discussions? I'm thinking perhaps we can collectively pick 2-3 books and/or movies each month (that way, we have options) and host a discussion post where we can chatter on about it to our hearts content.

Collectively means everyone in the community would have input on the material because I don't want to come up with it every month. I know in the past I've read things I normally wouldn't have thought of due to the interest of a book/movie club, and like the idea of expanding my horizons.

- How do you tend to read books? By that I mean, do you purchase new, used, library, borrow from friends, eBook, etc.
- How about movies? Do you go to theatrical releases? Do you wait for the DVD? Stream?
(I'm not asking about whether you obtain via legal means or not, just what method you use to watch. If you say 'download', I'll assume you purchased it. *winks*)

um ...and here, have a poll.

Poll! )

Also, don't forget we have a friending meme going on. Lots of friendly folks, so stop on by! :D
