june discussion post: FOOD!

In this month's food post, let's discuss...

Seasonal Eats!

I dunno about you all, but it's now reaching temperatures of over 100F/38C every day and for me, the types of foods I like to eat this time of the year are light, easy to make, and often not hot. I'm curious what you all like to eat this time of the year too!

What's in your summer foods repertoire? Snacks, meals, frozen treats? (Or if you're in the southern hemisphere, what's in your winter foods repertoire?)

Yes! I'm a salad person too. My mom buys this thing that has 4 heads of different kinds of lettuce and that's enough to last us all week. I put sweet peppers and cucumbers and cheese and croutons. Sometimes I put in some of that Tyson grilled chicken and omnomnom.

I'm slowly getting into more fruits and vegetables, which are awesome for a good snack during summer. Stuff like pineapple and honeydew melon and grapes are omnomnomy. So is just cucumber slices dipped down in ranch dip.

I'M MAKING MYSELF HUNGRY EVEN THOUGH I JUST ATE.

Kidding.
not really

I like salads in the summer, I don't like too many salad dressings anymore though. My friend bought me some gourmet froo-froo basalmic stuff and I mix it up with some olive oil. I also like cheese and a side of bread.

SMOOTHIES. I make a lot of fruit smoothies, too. And clementines are yummy.

ETA: I forgot to mention vodka/jell-o shooters.

Seconding smoothies. My favorite is made of peaches, passionfruit juice and vanilla frozen yogurt. Sweet and tart at the same time and so refreshing.

I'm pretty picky about my salad dressings, too. I love sesame ginger, and it's the one I almost always go for. There's a deli near where I work that mixes up salads with whatever ingredients you choose (and they'll chop it if you want too) and their sesame ginger dressing is amazing.

I love chopped up salads, it'd be awesome to find a place to do that for me.

There is a chain called Chop't, which is all chopped salads. There's a bunch in NYC and the New York area, not sure about outside of that. Maybe there are a few near you (or something similar). The deli I go to just started chopping salads recently - I think it was because one of the Chop't chains opened around the corner from them and they didn't want to lose business.

YUM smoothies. I add kale to mine. Can't taste it at all and it makes them super nutritious.

Much like the picture, watermelon is my summer go-to. This is pretty much the only time I'll eat any.

My husband and I have that problem with watermelon. Here it's more worth your money to buy the whole melon rather than pay for it to be sliced and packaged, so we often end up with more than we can handle.

ICE CREAM!!!!!

And limeade. I love limeade. It's perfect in the summertime and it's better than lemonade. :D

And as others have said, light stuff. Salad. Fruit. Smoothies. Seafood, cold or hot. Hot food includes things that aren't too heavy, like hamburgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob, barbecue.

Salads. Fresh fruit. Salads that include fresh fruit. Grilled chicken and steak. Ice cream. Anything with a high water content that doesn't involve turning on the oven, basically. :)

I need to find some more salad recipes, actually.

I've been digging fresh veggies and dip so far this season. I just got a food dehydrator for my birthday so kale chips and dried fruit and fruit leather are totally going to be on my list. And smoothies! Lots of smoothies.
