I'm going to New York City for the first time in July!

And then moving there in August.

If you make it up you should wait until after I'm there and settled into my new shoebox apartment.

At this point, I only have to be on campus one day a week. I'm still waiting to find out if I get to TA though.

Travel is my favourite thing EVER, seriously. I'm lucky in that I live in the UK so I've seen a fair amount of Europe as well as Africa, Russia, North America, Canada and the Far East. My favourites were Japan (where I lived for a year and got to see so much) and NYC.

This year, I'm off to Budapest and hoping to make day trips to Vienna and Bratislava.

My dream vacation right now is Cape Town but it changes all the time! I'd also love to go to South Korea and Vancouver, as well as New Zealand.

As for travel advice... it's weird, I love travel but I'm actually not the best at it? Haha. I guess it'd be not to be afraid to get your hands dirty. My best tip for travelling is to take public transport as much as possible - I think you just get to see so much more than doing the organised tours.

I love to travel. Well, I love being other places. The actual travel less so, although I do love that moment of just leaving, of starting to move and knowing you're going somewhere new. Especially when I'm on a plane, because then there's not only the excitement but also the moment of "we're not touching the ground anymore!" and that's pretty amazing. Airport security sucks, though.

I've been to Italy, England, as far east as Halifax in Canada, and to various parts of the United States. London, Napa Valley, and Québec City were my favourites of the places I've been. Venice and Rome were pretty amazing too.

This year I'm going to Baltimore. (That counts, right?) I'm planning on heading back to London next year.

I have lots of other places I'd like to visit. Japan. Thailand. Spain. Morocco. I also need to see western Canada. One day.

Hey, I've been promised excellent gelato in Baltimore! I have EXPECTATIONS.

Morocco's pretty high on my list. I'm supposed to be going with my brother. Eventually. I should really plan that...

You should come to New York. Or back to New York, whichever applies.

I liked New York! I'd go back. I was only there for two days. I think that's about a nine hour bus ride. Or Porter probably flies there. Hmm...

I'm from the Cascades. I have traveled to several different countries, and I still think they're one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Most of the people I know who travel a lot for work seem to get sick of it pretty quickly. Not nearly as much fun as travelling for pleasure, I suspect. (Now academic conferences, on the other hand, are more like vacation travel. Especially since nearly everyone tacks on a few vacation days if it's in a good spot. Like my little European tour a couple of years ago.)

Also, the Inca Trail will be AWESOME.

I haven't the money for travel, haha. I've never been out of the U.S. I pine for England, my literary motherland, but, again, no monies. Also I hate cheap lodgings (grotty bathrooms ewww) and get nauseous on long car rides, which does not bode well for plane rides. (I haven't actually been on a plane in, um. A lot of years.)

Travel destinations: I visited the Edward Gorey House in Yarmouth Port, MA, once. That was pretty cool. I've been to New York City a few times and have no special affection for it. So huge! So expensive! So dirty! I consider it overrated. But maybe that's just my Boston prejudice kicking in.

I never really go to do any traveling until I was older and went with my at-the-time-ex-fiance. LOL
What's an armchair traveler?

I went to the Outer Banks, Myrtle Beach, Naples-Fl, Tennessee, North Carolina, Erie, Canada, Washington DC, and a few others. I really enjoyed the Outer Banks and Erie. Probably not going anywhere this year b/c we bought a house. LOL (just got internet today!)

I'd love to see clear water somewhere. :)

NOPE. Just bring snacks.

Look at me, being on DW.

Do you like to travel?
To a certain extent. I enjoy traveling, but I enjoy having holidays at home without traveling as well.

Are you an armchair traveler?
Not really. I tend to just... go.

Where have you gone?
Canada, Japan (lived for 2+ years), Taiwan, Malaysia (living for 6+ months), Singapore. Plus random places around the US.

What travel destination was your favorite?
Taiwan was great. Taipei is an amazing city.

Where are you going this year?
I might go to Bali in a couple of weeks for a few days. I'm planning on going to Nepal in August. Maybe Hong Kong in September. And then possibly Thailand/Cambodia in November/December.

What's your dream vacation?
I want to go to Europe.

Do you have any travel advice?
Act like you know what you're doing. Bored expat who looks like they live there = less of a target than obvious tourist. Tell pushy cab drivers to stuff themselves. Support local businesses. Always carry about the equivalent of Pepto Bismol. Just because it's "safe" doesn't mean it's going to agree with your tummy. Don't do too much. Schedule in rest time. You'll enjoy your holiday more that way.
